Uttama Villain Movie Critic Reviews

Super Hit Movie - Deccan Chronicle

Does the movie live up to expectations? The answer is partially yes. The film is about the life of a superstar with and without a mask. A picture in picture, the movie revolves around a commercially hit hero

The story takes twist and turn and eventually ends in an unexpected note. Combining Theyyam, an ancient dance form of Kerala and Tamil folk music Villupattu adds new sheen to the film. But the eighth century episodes seem to be a mismatch. Somewhere it lacks the pep and punch one would associate with a Kamal film. Though some of the scenes individually engaging especially the conversations between KB and Kamal, the first half moves at a leisurely pace testing ones patience. Thankfully, post interval it picks up momentum.

The emotional bonding between Kamal his wife Urvashi, son and daughter are noteworthy.
Madhu Sudhanans visual effects and Shamdats camera are flesh and blood for the movie. Ghibrans handling of background score is all the more gripping. Lalgudi sets warrant mention.

Uttama Villain an 8th Century drama flick

Surprisingly, Uttama Villain is a simple film with a simple plot made complicated with its not so great screenplay. Kamal Haasan is that typical superstar who wants more out of his glittering yet complicated life. The answer he gets in search of something more is an extra marital affair. The movie then revolves around him, his emotions and the complications involved in his life. Pushed to an unavoidable situation, he decides to make the best film of his career and approaches his mentor, played by K Balachander to direct the film of his life. The film then treats you with a movie inside a movie(8th Century drama flick) and narrates two stories parallely. What happens to the movie and what does fate has in store for one of the greatest actors of present era forms the crux of the story

Uttama Villain an Entertaining Commercial Film - Sify

The sheer thrill of watching a film and not knowing what will happen next is one of the great pleasures offered by director Ramesh Aravind. Manoranjan ( Kamal Haasan) is a superstar with arrogance, insecurities and vices. People close to him are his Man Friday cum manager Chokkalingam, father in law Poornachandra Rao (K Viswanath) who produces his films, wife Varalakshmi (Urvasi) and his doctor Arpana (Andrea).

One day he suddenly decides to return the advance taken from a producer and instead do a comedy film with his mentor and guru Margadarsi (K Balachandar). This is big news that comes as a shock to everyone including his family and manager. But Manoranjan has a reason and how he goes about it forms the rest of the story.

Climax is the trump card

Interval: Good. Lovely 8th century portions while the present is more of a drama. Kamal and Nassar - absolutely brilliant! Immortal classic. A highly emotional film which has been pulled off with subtlety. Ulaganayagan is here in style!. A decent first half which shoots up big 15 mins post interval. The climax is the trump card, deserves a standing ovation. Yes, you will get teary-eyed if you connect with it. There are a few lows, but when you eat the fruit, throw away the seeds.
